Why Handmade Soap?
Soap is one of the most often used product in the people’s lives. There are many different varieties of soaps in the market, but they all have the same function, to wash. There are reasons I recommend to use handmade soaps.
First, the ingredients. My handmade soaps’ finished products only contains natural ingredients, such as olive oil, coconut oil, water, and essential oils etc… The only chemical I use at the production stage is lye / alkaline powder. Lye causes a chemical reaction to form the oils into soaps. {Fat(oil) + Alkaline(lye) = Soap & glycerin} After 4-6 weeks of curing, there is none remain lye in the soaps, so my handmade soap is very safe and natural. On the other hand, commercial soap uses a number of chemicals and artificial ingredients such as Emulsifier, Detergent, Chemical lathering agent etc… that can be cause of skin irritation. (BTW, liquid soaps are harsh to your skin, so I don’t recommend you to use it, I’ll talk about it soon in another post.)
Second, soap making methods. I use traditional Cold–process method to make soaps, which doesn’t spoil ingredients by heat. Handmade soaps contain glycerin as a by-product, which pumpers, moisturize the skin nicely and beautifully. My handmade soaps is designed to contain some extra oils remain in the soaps which act as moisturizer. My handmade soaps cleanse the skin nicely, at the same time it moisturizes your skin. However, factories remove the glycerin from the commercial soaps, because glycerin makes the soaps softer (people don’t like soft soaps…) and the companies would sell the glycerin separately. Commercial soaps do not contain extra oils remain in the soaps, which also make the soaps softer, and thats additional cost to produce soaps. Cold-process method takes good time, but the way to creates best soaps.
Lastly, effect on the environment.
I only use biodegradable or re-usable packaging for my products. My handmade soaps do not use individual plastic bottles (because it’s bar soap! duh), so using handmade soaps can create less trash and are eco-friendly. Commercial soaps create water pollution from the chemical ingredients, while handmade soaps’
